| Mauna Loa volcano viewed from Volcano House. Seen here on a rare clear day, Mauna Loa shows the broad form of a classic shield volcano. Volcano House sits on the edge of Kilauea caldera in what must be one of the world's most spectacular hotel locations. The summit of Mauna Loa is over 13,000' above sea level. The broad tree-covered area in the foreground is a slumped portion of the Kilauea caldera rim. Slumping of the steep cliffs is common, and the (geologically) long-term survival of Volcano House is in doubt. |
