These pages contain pictures of a run that I made on August 5, 2001, in Yosemite National Park. The original plan had been for John Bartley and me to run the entire High Sierra Camp loop, which is about 45 miles long. However, John had to return to Salt Lake City a week early, so I was on my own. I changed the route to cut off the last two High Sierra Camps, leaving it about 31 miles long--about a 50K. I started at Tuolumne High Sierra Camp and finished at the Cathedral trailhead, getting a lift to the start after dropping my car at the finish.

The High Sierra Camps average about 8 miles apart and have water fountains. The route starts at about 8600 feet and climbs to 10,100 feet at the first HSC, Vogelsang. Then comes a big drop down to Merced Lake at about 7000 feet, followed by a big, hot, sunny climb up to Sunrise HSC at about 9800 feet. This was the hard part. The run out from Sunrise was fairly gentle, but I was tired. I got out about 4 pm, making the run/walk about 9 hours long. It was about the same length as the 50K race I did a few years ago, but took twice as long!

I took a tiny reusable camera along for these pictures. The pictures don't really do the scenery justice. If you are ever in Yosemite, there are many runs, of whatever length you like, that you can do through this and similar scenery.

Shut up and show me the pictures
