Prof. Glazner's First Year Seminar, Fall 2003

Field Geology of Eastern California

We had an early flight (6:30 a.m.) which meant leaving Chapel Hill at 4:30--which is 1:30 a.m. California time.

Everyone wore Carolina blue, so we made quite a blue mob on the planes and in the airports. Several people asked what team we were. Some of the students said "the diving team", others said "inner-tube water polo."

It was about a 5-hour drive to Death Valley.

Scenery near Tecopa, California. These are lake sediments that accumulated in ancient Lake Tecopa. Near here there is a layer of volcanic ash about a meter thick that came from a volcano in Yellowstone National Park--a LONG way away.

As the daylight started to fade the colors really came out in the beautiful mountains.

We were fortunate to have dinner with Ryan and Stacy Taylor (both graduates of our department) and their new baby Ava, the latest Tarheel in Death Valley.
