Prof. Glazner's First Year Seminar, Fall 2003

Field Geology of Eastern California

Lateral moraines along lower Pine Creek northwest of Bishop.

The Bishop Tuff, remnants of a huge volcanic eruption 760,000 years ago.

Curving columns in the Bishop Tuff.

Steaming fumarole at Casa Diablo geothermal plant. It smelled like the House of the Devil--very sulfurous.

The Casa Diablo plant is tucked away in the trees. It provides enough renewable, friendly power for about 40,000 homes. Magma is your friend.

Obligatory shot of Devil's Postpile. Students are on top (about 3 pixels each).

Columns are supposed to have 6 sides, but if you count a lot of them you see that 5 is more common than 6. Why?

On top of the Postpile.

Fall on the San Joaquin River upstream of the Postpile.

We finished the day at Hot Creek. Pay no attention to the "DANGER--SCALDING WATER--UNSTABLE GROUND--KEEP OUT" sign.
