Leg 2: Around Split Mountain

We circle back and forth above Red Mountain Creek to gain altitude. The little Cessna 152 climbs slowly at these altitudes (here, about 10,000'). Note how thin the dark brown screen of Campito Formation is, smashed between the leucogranite below and granodiorite above.

We fly south and get a great view of Taboose Pass to the west. The pass, at about 11,100', lies between Cardinal Mountain on the north and Goodale Mountain on the south.

Flying back north, we look southwest over the summit of Mount Tinemaha (12,561') at Split Mountain.

Winds are light, so we edge closer to the mountain face for a better look.

A closer view of Cardinal Mountain.

The northern side of Red Mountain Creek. Red Mountain Lake and a smaller unnamed lake are visible on the left.

Close to the southern, unnamed summit of Split Mountain. In detail the interfingering of the Campito and Poleta Formations is complex, but the stratigraphic order remains more-or-less intact. Several mafic dikes of the Jurassic Independence swarm are visible cutting the face.

Cardinal Mountain. Two little blocks of Poleta Formation sit atop the peak, and Independence dikes cut everything.

At least a zillion Independence dikes cut this cliff, on Mt. Prater.
