Research Interests

Air-sea interaction processes and the dynamics of the Gulf Stream, focusing on the mesoscale fluctuations which occur in the Stream on weekly and longer time scales. Of primary importance in this class of oceanic motions are wavelike disturbances called Gulf Stream meanders.

Research Activities

Gulf Stream meanders which propagate into the deep waters of the Atlantic Ocean northeast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, and their interactions with the surrounding circulations; the strong wintertime air-sea interaction processes that occur along the Gulf Stream. Both observational and theoretical approaches are used in these studies.

A schematic depicting the passage of a cold front over the Gulf Stream off the east coast of the United States and the ocean-to-atmosphere heat fluxes that result. This process is responsible for modification of the Gulf Stream and coastal waters, and it causes winter storm intensification, sometimes resulting in dramatic snow and ice storms.
